Why Easter, Thanksgiving & Other Holidays Move Every Year

Christmas never moves. Easter can wander across a five-week window. Thanksgiving is always a Thursday but never the same Thursday. And Ramadan drifts steadily backwards through the entire calendar, taking 33 years to lap it. Behind every holiday date is one of three systems — and once you know which system a holiday uses, you can predict it forever.
System One: Fixed Dates
The easy ones. Christmas (25 December), New Year's Day (1 January), Halloween (31 October), Valentine's Day (14 February), and national days like the Fourth of July sit on the same calendar square every year. The only thing that changes is the weekday, which shuffles forward one position per year — two after a leap-year February. That's why Christmas fell on a Thursday in 2025 but lands on a Friday in 2026.
Fixed dates are simple for calendars but awkward for workers: a fixed holiday can land on a weekend and effectively vanish. Many countries patch this with "observed" days off on the nearest Monday or Friday — so the holiday itself doesn't move, but the day off does.
System Two: Weekday Rules
The second family pins a holiday not to a date but to a formula: the Nth weekday of a month. Thanksgiving is the classic — the fourth Thursday of November, which can fall anywhere from the 22nd to the 28th.
Its history shows why the formula matters. Abraham Lincoln proclaimed Thanksgiving as the last Thursday of November in 1863. In 1939 — a year when November had five Thursdays — President Franklin D. Roosevelt moved it a week earlier to stretch the Christmas shopping season, a deeply controversial decision mocked as "Franksgiving"; some states refused and celebrated on the old date, so for three years America had two Thanksgivings. Congress settled the matter in December 1941: the fourth Thursday, by law, ever since.
Weekday rules run through the whole US civic calendar:
- Martin Luther King Jr. Day — third Monday of January
- Presidents' Day — third Monday of February
- Mother's Day — second Sunday of May
- Memorial Day — last Monday of May
- Father's Day — third Sunday of June
- Labor Day — first Monday of September
- Thanksgiving — fourth Thursday of November (Canada's is the second Monday of October)
Many of the Monday holidays owe their position to the Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1968, which deliberately relocated several observances to Mondays to create three-day weekends. The weekday-rule system guarantees the day of the week — which is precisely the point.
System Three: The Moon
Easter, the champion of moveable feasts
Easter's rule was fixed by the Council of Nicaea in AD 325: it falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after 21 March. Three moving parts — a date, a lunar cycle, and a weekday — give it a range of 35 possible dates, from 22 March to 25 April. (Church tables use a simplified "ecclesiastical" moon rather than the real sky, so Easter can occasionally differ from what an astronomer would compute.)
An entire convoy of observances is chained to Easter and moves with it: Ash Wednesday (46 days before), Palm Sunday (one week before), Good Friday (two days before), Ascension (39 days after), and Pentecost (49 days after). Mardi Gras is simply the day before Ash Wednesday — which is why Carnival season shifts too. Orthodox churches calculate the same rule on the older Julian calendar, so Orthodox Easter usually lands one to five weeks after the Western date, coinciding only occasionally.
Lunar calendars worldwide
- Chinese New Year begins at a particular new moon and so swings between 21 January and about 20 February — in 2026 it falls on 17 February, opening the Year of the Horse.
- Ramadan and Eid follow the purely lunar Islamic calendar, which is about 11 days shorter than the solar year — so they arrive roughly 11 days earlier each year, cycling through every season over 33 years.
- Hanukkah starts on 25 Kislev in the lunisolar Hebrew calendar, landing anywhere from late November to late December.
- Diwali tracks the new moon of the Hindu month of Kartika, falling in October or November.

Note the swing: Easter 2027 arrives in March, then leaps almost three weeks later for 2028. Extremes are rarer — Easter last hit its earliest possible date (22 March) in 1818 and won't again until 2285, while the latest date (25 April) last occurred in 1943 and returns in 2038.

Can Thanksgiving ever fall in December?
No. The fourth Thursday of November can be no earlier than the 22nd and no later than the 28th.
Why do Ramadan dates sometimes differ by a day between countries?
Because many communities begin the month only on an actual sighting of the new crescent moon, while others use astronomical calculation — visibility differs by geography and weather.
